bored

i´m alone and there´s not much to do here, so i´m throwing away my reais in the internet cafes.

i´ve never been more convinced, after reading schlesinger´s essay on the topic and evaluating the current disgrace in the white house, that the office of the vice president should be abolished.

it also interesting to put the current situation in context and realize how conservative our government has been since kennedy. there actually hasn´t been a public-minded democrat since then. in the profile on justice john paul stevens in the current nyt magazine, he made the comment that every justice appointed since him (which happened in 1975) has been progressively more conservative, with the exception of ginsberg, i think.

i think the next discussion topic will be about trying to understand why this conservative period has lasted so long, appearing to break the 30-year rhythm that´s been more or less constant since the eighteenth century.

Hi Mick,

The reais are well spent if you are reading, writing and communicating...when does Luana come back, or is she? I am sending another package of reading materials on Monday so you should have soon. Let me know if you read this before then if you need anything else for your classes or personally.

Mick, you have not commented on what you are doing about your visa . I cant stress enough how painful it will be for you if you cannot return to Brazil because you overstayed this visit. You will not be happy. Let me know what you are doing on that.

Yes, it was been a very confusing and long spell of conservatism in this country. Frankly, there is concern we are not out of the woods yet and no real candidate to reverse that course.

I can't wait to see you.
Love, Mom

sup dude,
I was recently having a conversation amongst my peers about, what appears to me, a "loophole" in the system with vice presidents.
The President appoints his vice president who will then be able to pardon the President if the President is empeached. For example. Bob becomes President. Bob appoints John as his vice. Bob starts raping children and is empeached. John becomes President and pardons Bob on all counts.

Or in our situation today, the President probably feels safe against assassination because he chose the only person in the world who people would hate more than him. Now it seems like it would be to the President's advantage to pick a real asshole as his vice.
Either way, not good.
